Singing Techniques- Becoming The Best Critic of Your Voice in Order to Sing Well
Becoming your own voice critic is essential, yet difficult task in singing techniques. It is essential in order to avoid disgraceful stern criticism in auditions or competitions. I am talking of criticisms and sometime disgrace met by Simon Cowell of American Idol, and other critics of talent hunts. These could have been minimized if not totally avoided had the singers learned to develop critical ears for their singing.
Another reason is that it is impossible to sing well and learn good singing techniques without knowing your own voice: You must know your voice range. What are the tonal qualities of your singing voice? Experimenting with different ways of shaping your own mouth, throat, and body to produce different sounds will aid you towards singing mastery. So how can you differentiate these varieties without learning to hear your own voice? Yet it is easier said than done.
The difficulty of adopting unbiased critical ears for your own voice lies in the way we hear songs. The people you sing to (the audience) hears your voice when the sound leaves your mouth, passes through the atmosphere to their eardrums. You on the other hands hear your voice internally, the way it is, unalloyed without any external interference or enhancement. Therefore the sound of your voice received by you straight is different from what you throw out to the audience.
This hasn’t got anything to do with whether you are tone deaf or not musically inclined. The inability to hear one’s voice objectively has made many to become their own worst critic. For example, some reasonably good singers take their voice to be too nasal, muffled: whereas others hear it as perfect and normal. The difference is in the hearing and not necessarily the quality of one’s voice.
This over stern criticism has made many to give up pursuing their singing dreams, even shy away from coming forward in competitions. Some have fallen into the error of imitating other successful singers’ voice quality. They fail to realize that each voice has its distinguish characteristics, that the world might be waiting for.
So, what is the remedy to this situation? – By using tape recorder to record your voice, and then playing it back. In that way you will be able to hear your voice the way the audience hears it. with that you can become more objective with the criticism of your voice qualities.
Adopting the above simple technique will aid in singing well and fine tuning your singing techniques.
Fortunately enough you don’t even need to have a tape, there is a Mini Recording Studio and other accessories that you can use without leaving your computer in a program I reviewed in my resource box.
